The Tamar Bridge is a 335 m main span suspension and cable stayed bridge, and is the main strategic road link across the River Tamar, near Plymouth, UK. The structure carries four lanes.
Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee contracted ABUK (working under the banner of ABI) to carry out upper and lower hanger and cable band bolt replacements and miscellaneous remedial works to the suspension system on the bridge. ABUK worked with ALPS to design temporary work platforms to install the temporary cable bands under the deck and at the main cable level.
The bolt replacements are currently being made at numerous locations along the main cables with provision for replacement bolts at all upper hanger and cable band locations. At each of the locations the unloading is being carried out using jacks and temporary cable bands.
